Know what to do when something happens.

If you already have a policy, use the claims instructions and contact information provided by your insurer. The steps below are general guidance and do not replace your policy's requirements.

1. Prioritize safety

If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first.

2. Document what happened

When safe, record the date, circumstances, relevant photos and names of involved parties.

3. Contact your insurer

Use the claims number or process on your policy documents as soon as reasonably possible.

4. Keep records

Save receipts, correspondence and claim reference details. Avoid assuming an expense is covered before confirmation.

Questions to consider

Think about your circumstances, the risks you want to address, any existing coverage, the limits you may need and the amount you can afford. Ask about exclusions, deductibles, claims procedures and what is not covered.
